Megstr is a relatively new DJ to the Albany area, however like most she isn't new to music. Playing her first show only about a month ago she has already caught the attention of some of the bigger names in our area. Last night she kicked off Untiy 15, a series of monthly events put on by DJ Eric David, I was able to sit down with her after her tag team set with her sister under the name Bionic.

First off, the question I always start with, what made you want to do this?
Well back when I did cheer-leading with my sister we would use Virtual DJ to make mixes for our practices and stuff. I've always been very involved with music with singing. I wanted to become more apart of this scene so I figured I would take on Dj'ing.

Seeing as you mentioned you made mixes in Virtual DJ, are you a self taught DJ?
Yes and no. I did some practicing with that but mainly I was taught by Jabo who has really helped me out.

Seeing as youl use Virtual DJ, you have to get some shit for that right?
Oh fuck yes I do! I'm too poor to be able to get anything else right now haha but I'm working on it!

What was the first show you performed at and how did it make you feel?
My first show was Stuff Your Face With Bass: White Massive as Bionic. It was a great feeling to be able to perform at a show with Alvin Risk and gLAdiator headlining even if it was the side room. We had the opening slot but still had about 20 people there at 7pm, so it was good for so early.

How about first solo show as Megstr?
That show was Blackout! It was a great feeling I deff raged out hard for my set then haha

Ah yes I remember your set from that night. Myself, Rome Thrasher, and Dash were actually talking about it as you played. Did they say anything to you afterwards?
After Rome played I went up to him and said he played a great set, but after I said that he goes to me "No, you played a great set! and we need to talk".

How did that make you feel when he said that to you?
I felt so shocked and was in awe. Rome, along with Hazeyy and KeN3Tic, are the DJ's I really look up to in our area. So to have one of them approach me was just an overall amazing feeling.

Other than Dj'ing what else do you do to help this scene in Albany?
I GoGo and Promote for U IS Nation.

Which artists influence you the most?
I am a HUGE Bassnectar fan. Without a doubt he is my EDM God haha. I've seen him five times and would be more but I don't have the money for it. I also love glitch hop a lot, so the combination of Griz and Gramatik as Grizmatik is hard for me to not be in love with. I see the NERVO twins doing what they do and I would love to see myself and my sister some day get to that position.

I know you produced one track so far, are you working on more and how come you haven't played it in any of your sets?
I haven't played it because at the time I didn't know how to master and I still feel that it isn't fully complete. As far as working on more, I'm reworking my original track now and me and my sister have started working on a few things together.

Lets close off with you telling us about your upcoming shows and maybe a personal message from Megstr?
I can tell you that I will be at Kandi Land 2 which features Dank as the headliner. It's a great feeling seeing my name on that flyer with someone as great as him. I will also be closing out the official Kandi Land after party at Fuze Box right after that show. As far as a personal message goes....I have nothing but I can give some advice! Don't waste time doing something you hate. Life's too short and ain't nobody got time for that.

Megstr is someone I can see working her way up in the local scene. For only being around for a short amount of time I feel that she has done a good job thus far. Judging by the kind of company she likes to keep and with the guidance of these other DJ's, I see her in due time emerging as a very well rounded DJ that can only keep going up from here.
